Frances Black

From Birmingham What's On

Sister of Mary, Black's fought back from alcoholism to carve a successful solo Irish career, and is now looking to expand her horizons. She shares her sibling's fondness for country flavours, but her voice is sweeter and choice of material more mainstream, shading towards the cool jazz hues of a Judie Tzuke than the roots of Nanci Griffith. Don't Get Me Wrong (Columbia) covers the Bee Gees, Lesley Duncan's Love Song and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow alongside more obscure offerings, and while charting a safer path, is no less accomplished, Armed With A Broken Heart a fine example of the combination of ache and determination she embodies, Alexandra Theatre, Sun Oct 4.
